DIABETIC FEET

If you have recently been diagnosed with Diabetes your GP is likely to arrange a care plan for you. This is called an Enhanced Primary Care Plan. It entitles you to up to 5 Allied Health visits/year funded by Medicare. Under this referral your risk status for developing Diabetes related foot complications will be assessed.
A neurovascular assessment is undertaken to check for loss of sensation and or reduced blood flow to the feet. Neuropathy and poor blood flow can result in poor wound healing and diabetic foot complications. Foot shape or deformity combined with ill-fitting footwear are risk factors for foot injury. Good patient understanding of reducing risks of injury is an important factor in maintaining good foot health. Accommodative soft orthoses for pressure areas and the provision of general Podiatry treatments is highly recommended for those patients with Diabetes.
