HEEL PAIN

Heel pain can occur at any age. Children involved in sport can strain the plantar fascia, particularly if they are not stretching before/after activity. Often the calf or hamstring muscles are already tight due to a quick growth spurt. This can lead to a strain injury. Pain at the back of the heel may be due to inflammation at the growth plate in the heel bone (Sever's Disease) or achilles tendonitis.

Adults may develop heel pain due to a combination of factors. Common causes are flat feet or high arches, poor footwear, long hours of standing/walking and tightness in leg muscles. Early treatment increases the chance of a full recovery and early return to activity. Initial treatments include taping, ICE, rest, stretching/strengthening exercises and footwear advice. For persistant pain we offer Deep Shock Wave Therapy and Cushioned Orthoses.
